Funerals

A funeral should sound like the person it is for. I will help you find the words.

I am Marian. I write and lead funeral ceremonies across Shropshire: ceremonies about one life, shaped with the people who loved them.

If you are arranging a funeral now, you can call me any time: 07909 944404. There is no need to have the right words ready.

A ceremony about the person

A celebrant funeral is written around one life. We build the ceremony from the person themselves: their stories, their music, the things they always said, the people they loved.

Religious elements are welcome if they matter to you: a hymn, a prayer, a favourite reading. If you would rather have none at all, that is just as right. The ceremony belongs to your family, not to a formula.

There will be sadness, and that is as it should be. But where I can, I hope to guide you gently back to the good memories, and to the smiles that come with them.

I have sat with families before

Before I became a celebrant I was a nurse. I worked in coronary care and intensive care, and my last role was in a nursing home. I have been alongside families on some of their hardest days, and what those years taught me was to listen first.

That is still how I work. You will not need to look after me, or hold yourself together for my sake. Tell me about the person, in whatever order it comes, and I will take care of the rest.

How it works

Three steps, taken at your pace.

We talk about them

At your home, or somewhere you feel comfortable. There is no form and no hurry. You tell me about the person, and I will listen.

I write, you read every word

I write the ceremony and share every word with you before the day. Nothing is spoken that you have not seen and approved.

On the day

I arrive in good time and lead the ceremony calmly and clearly, holding the room so that you do not have to.

Hear Marian read

A poem, read the way it would be read on the day.

A short film of Marian reading aloud is being made. It will live here soon.

While someone is still here

Some families choose a ceremony held in life: the words, the stories and the love, heard in person. It is called a living memorial, and it can sit alongside a later farewell.

About living memorials

I am here when you are ready

There is no need to have anything worked out before you get in touch. Call me, or write when it feels right.
